Learn how to install and configure the Pedal Commander for your Mini Cooper to eliminate throttle lag and improve acceleration.

Quick answer

Install the Pedal Commander for Mini Cooper in under 30 minutes to eliminate pedal lag and choose a driving mode that matches your daily commute or spirited driving.

Why your Mini Cooper needs a throttle controller

Factory throttle programming in many Mini Cooper models introduces a delay between your foot and the engine response. This lag can make the car feel sluggish off the line or unresponsive in traffic. The Pedal Commander bypasses that delay by adjusting the signal from the gas pedal before it reaches the ECU.

The result is an immediate, linear feel that makes acceleration more predictable. It does not increase horsepower, but it changes how and when that power is delivered.

Choosing your driving mode before you drive

The Pedal Commander offers several modes that change the throttle curve. For daily driving in stop-and-go traffic, the Eco or City mode reduces sensitivity so the car doesn't feel jerky. For highway merging or passing, the Sport or Sport+ mode sharpens the response so a small pedal movement produces more acceleration.

A common mistake is leaving the controller in a high-sensitivity mode all the time, which can make the Mini Cooper feel twitchy in parking lots or during light rain.

Step-by-step installation and setup

  1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal: Open the hood and use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery cable. This prevents the ECU from registering a fault while you unplug the pedal. Skipping this step may trigger a check-engine light that requires a reset.
  2. Unplug the factory pedal connector: Locate the gas pedal assembly inside the cabin. Reach behind the pedal and press the release tab on the wiring harness connector. Pull it straight out. The connector can be stiff on older Mini Coopers; use a flathead screwdriver gently if needed.
  3. Plug the Pedal Commander inline: Connect the Pedal Commander module between the factory harness and the pedal. The connectors are keyed, so they only fit one way. Push until you hear a click. If the module does not sit flush, rotate it 180 degrees and try again.
  4. Mount the controller and secure cables: Use the included double-sided tape to attach the module to a clean, flat surface near the pedal. Route the cable away from moving parts and zip-tie any slack. Do not mount it directly under the pedal where your heel may knock it loose.
  5. Reconnect the battery and start the car: Reattach the negative terminal and tighten it. Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds. The Pedal Commander will default to mode 0 (no adjustment). If the engine runs rough, cycle the ignition off and on once to clear any temporary ECU confusion.
  6. Select your preferred mode: Press the mode button on the controller to cycle through the settings. For daily driving, start with mode 2 (City) or mode 3 (Sport). Test each mode in a safe area. Mode 5 (Sport+) is best for highway passing but can feel abrupt in stop-and-go traffic.
